An Aboriginal-owned not-for-profit carbon farming business

Arnhem Land Fire Abatement

In the remote, tropical savannas of northern Australia, Traditional Owners and rangers utilise customary fire knowledge to accomplish highly sophisticated landscape-scale fire management which prevents the frequency and intensity of hot and destructive wildfires.
Arnhem Land Fire Abatement (ALFA) (NT) is an entirely Aboriginal-owned not-for-profit carbon farming business created by Arnhem Land Traditional Owners in 2013 to support their engagement with the carbon industry.

ALFA currently supports Traditional Owners to manage six fire projects across an area of over 80,000 square kilometres from east to west Arnhem Land. This includes four declared Indigenous Protected Areas (IPAs)—Djelk, Warddeken, South East Arnhem Land and Laynhapuy—as well as two IPAs currently under review—Mimal Land Management Aboriginal Corporation and Arafura Swamp Rangers Aboriginal Corporation.
ALFA's main aims are to support planned savanna fire management across Arnhem Land and to manage the administration of carbon credits, ensuring that its earnings benefit the Traditional Owners of Arnhem Land.
