The Traditional Owners of the Warddeken Indigenous Protected Area
WarddekenRangers
Warddeken Land Management Limited is an Aboriginal-owned ranger organisation that combines traditional ecological knowledge with Western science to manage and protect one of Australia’s most unique environments.
Warddeken operates across 14,000 square kilometres of spectacular stone and gorge country known as the Kuwarddewardde. The Indigenous Protected Area (IPA) is located immediately east of Kakadu National Park and the Warddeken rangers operate from three remote bases: Kabulwarnamyo and Manmoyi in Koyek ward, and Mamadawerre in Kakbi ward. The Warddeken IPA is owned and managed by the Nawarddeken Traditional Owners from 36 different clan groups through a complex system of customary law. Their vision is to have healthy people living and working on healthy Country. They want the management of their land to be in their hands now and into the future.
When their IPA was first declared, they founded KKT alongside the neighbouring Djelk IPA to help make this vision a reality. Each year, Warddeken Land Management employ over 200 Indigenous rangers to work on a variety of projects across the IPA including fire management and carbon abatement, biodiversity conservation, weed and feral animal control, rock art conservation, education and cultural heritage management. Warddeken was also the pioneer of Australia’s first carbon abatement project.
